When Nathan MacKinnon became the highest player in NHL History it was only a matter of time before Auston Matthews would attempt to pass that number. It was initially believed that Matthews would look to simply pass MacKinnon by a small margin, but now it seems he wants to leave MacKinnon in the dust.
According to Nick Kypreos Matthews and his agent are seeking $15,000,000 per year.
Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.
Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply "hand it over" to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger. If the Maple Leafs give in and pay this kind of money they will have bigger depth problems then they are currently experiencing.
