Crosby, Malkin and Letang, while they are not spring chickens anymore, they are still performing at a rate that is well above league average, and are all still considered superstars. So while all these elite players are producing, the Penguins wanted to remain competitive, and missing the playoffs was not an option. So the ownership decided that a new leader must be brought in to take the team in a new direction.
Burke who isn't exactly new to being fired by NHL teams, has already found himself a new job just shortly after being let go.
Rob Rossi of the Athletic reported that Burke will be going back on Television for the Canadian networks during the playoffs:
Ron Hextall had 1-year remaining on contract that paid him $3.5M annually though his deal was backloaded.
