Surprising Defenseman Breaks An Orr Record

Tonight a record previously held by Bobby Orr has been broken. Orr was a dynamic offensive defenseman so it is no surprise he had the record for most points in a period by a defenseman.

Orr had a 4-point period on December 14th 1968 vs the Chicago Blackhawks in the first period where he scored 2 goals and 2 assists. That record has now been broken.

In the second period of the Pittsburgh Penguins game against the New York Islanders Penguins defenseman Kris Letang took control of the game. In an offensive flurry, Letang went off for 5 points in the period.

Kris Letang's five assists in the second vs NYI is the first time in NHL history a defenceman got five points in one period

Letang was once known as a highly offensive defenseman but in recent years has not put up as many points. With the addition of Erik Karlsson, many expected Letang to pivot to more of a defensive role. However, Letang clearly had other plans.

It is not often a record held by a legend like Bobby Orr is broken. Letang has cemented himself in hockey history with this incredible accomplishment.
