The Avalanche were forced to let a few of their top 6 players from last season go, who were huge contributors to their team success. With the departures of Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky, it left a huge void in their lineup, and with the absence of captain Gabriel Landeskog this season due to injury they haven't been a 'whole' team this season.
With the departure of Kadri it left a big missing piece at second line center. That position is currently being filled by Alex Newhook, but the 21 year old only has 6 points in 18 games and isn't quite ready for that responsibility 'yet'.
That is where the Montreal Canadiens come in. They have a few assets they would like to move during this season for some picks and prospects in return and they could have the missing piece the Avalanche are looking for.
Sean Monahan was brought in on a salary dump from the Calgary Flames, after having some poor season the last few years due to injuries. Well, this season he came in fully healthy and is making an impact with the team.
So far this season, Monahan 5 goals and 14 points in 21 games, and is looking really good. If the Montreal Canadiens would consider retaining 50% of the final year of his deal that pays $6,375,000, they could definitely get a good return for him.
Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now believes this is what the Habs could get for this player who was casted away from the Flames for NOTHING:
The Avalanche's window is now as Nathan MacKinnon's new contract kicks in next year, so if the Aves want to go all in for a cup, this would definitely help!
