After a demoralizing, 3-2, loss at San Jose, broadcast cameras followed the Oilers coach walking across the ice and may have caught him discussing the possibility that this might be the end with his assistant Dave Mason.
Following his team's fourth straight loss, Woodcroft seems clearly disheveled and leans in and seems to say to his assistant, "That might be it."
Oilers Nation columnist Zach Laing broke it down via a post on X, formerly Twitter, noting that Mason's one-word response, looks to be a simple:
The Oilers are in the midst of one of the worst starts in team history and on pace for their worst record ever, which seems preposterous when you have arguably the best player in the game on your roster.
Woodcroft has been the head coach since the 2021-22 season. Including this year he has compiled a 132-78-41 record, but with the horrific start, coupled with some failed playoff runs, the writing seems to be on the wall.
Edmonton's current four-game losing streak is the second such streak for the team this season, leading their coach to be asked if he was concerned for his job following Thursday's loss.
While Woodcroft did immediately respond, "No," he also noted that no one is pleased with the team's 2-9-1 start to what was a season with high expectations.
