McDavid In Hot Water For Hiding Sponsorship On Social Media
Generally, athletes, celebrities, and social media influencers will have sponsored posts on social media. This is particularly popular on Instagram. When a person makes a sponsored post they normally have to make their followers aware that it is a sponsored post that contains an ad.
A string of posts on social media by Connor McDavid has caused speculation that he is doing advertisements on Instagram without making it known that they are ads.
need him arrested for undisclosed sponsorship posthaste though
These photos show McDavid using products from a company called Alo Wellness. All of the posts make sure to have the brand's logo front and center even if it is subtly.
Will McDavid Face Discipline For These Unreported Ads?
According to the Federal Trade Commission Act Endorsement Guidelines what McDavid is doing could be potentially illegal.
In short, it all goes back to consumer transparency. Consumers have a right to know in an era of digital promotion what is «organic» and promoted because someone genuinely believes in something, or if they are reviewing, sharing, and promoting because they are incentivized to do so. And moreover, it is illegal not to disclose. That's right, it is not just unethical to improperly disclose. It breaks the Federal Trade Commission Act Endorsement Guidelines. Let's be perfectly clear: improper disclosure in influencer advertising and sponsored content is a crime
While McDavid will not be sent to jail he could be subjected to hefty fines if it is found he did not disclose an advertisement. While nothing will likely come from this there is a possibility McDavid faces consequences. If there is more progress in this story we will share it with you.
