The Dallas Stars had to fight the entire season and managed to sneak into the playoffs last year after the failure of the Vegas Golden Knights, but only to see themselves lose to the Calgary Flames in the round round after Jake Oettinger played an outstanding series.
Last season, the Stars had some break out young players, but did not get the production they would have liked from two of their long time star players. Tyler Seguin who is making $9,850,000 scored 24 goals and 49 points, which isn't a bad season for a normal player, but a star making as much as Seguin should be producing more. Same goes for Jamie Benn who makes $9,500,000 a season and only scored 18 goals and 46 points. Seguin has 5 more years remaining on his deal and Benn has 3. If these two continue on this decline, they are going to be some rough looking contracts going forward.
Yesterday the Dallas Stars owner Tom Galgardi called out his two forwards:
With those contracts they've got to bring more to the table. It hampers the team. It's getting a bit pathetic at this point.
We are remaining in a flap cap for atleast one more season and the Stars have a significant amount of players needing new contracts after next season, including a few key RFA's. Not to mention Jason Robertson who needs a contract now. It is going to be rough on the Stars with these two taking up over $19 million on the cap to score less than 50 points.
