When the Ottawa Senators brought in Alex DeBrincat last offseason, they expected him to be a 40-goal scorer to compliment other members of their top six like Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk.
However, DeBrincat was not the 40-goal scorer they were hoping for scoring only 27 goals and 66 points. While these are not bad numbers, they are not the numbers the Senators were hoping for and may be moving on from DeBrincat.
DeBrincat's qualifying offer is $9 million which is a huge chunk of change the Senators may not be able to afford and will be looking to shop around.
Enter the Washington Capitals. Washington will be looking to make a splash this offseason given how they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 last season. Washington is doing a retool trading pieces to acquire players like Rasmus Sandin while also selling off Dmitry Orlov at the trade deadline.
With Washington retooling, we could see them trade away a top six forward and picks for DeBrincat.
