Flames Captain Hopeful Gives Up on the Team After Over a Decade
The Flames look to be falling apart with one of their longest-tenured players looking to leave the franchise after over a decade of service with the Flames.
Backlund Wants Out
Throughout his NHL career, Mikael Backlund has proven he is one of the Flames' most consistent players. At 34 years old, Backlund has played over 900 games in the NHL all with the Calgary Flames.
The Flames are reported to want Backlund as their next captain. That makes a lot of sense too considering how he has been an alternate since 2018. However, with the Flames' future uncertain, Backlund may be done with Calgary.
This would be huge if he leaves as it would certainly put the Flames in rebuild mode as it shows the players' desire to leave. Other players to be rumored to want out of Calgary include Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin.
Nonetheless, the Flames will have some big decisions to make this offseason and with their 2025 first-round pick in the hands of Montreal, they may not be able to tank just yet.
