The Calgary Flames have recently locked up captain Mikael Backlund to an extension, and now, it appears they're looking to do the same for several key defenseman.

A veteran disrespected

According to a recent report, the Flames have begun extension talks with both Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin, but that Tanev felt very disrespected by the offer.

I'm not allowed to say anything more on Hanifin yet. No idea why they aren't announcing it. I CAN say that Tanev was «insulted» by whatever initial offer the team made. Assumption was lack of term attached.

That report states that it wasn't money, but the term that made him feel disrespected, and now, it appears the two sides could be at an impasse in extension talks.

Potential trade chip

If Calgary don't want to bring a different offer to the table, there's a very good chance that Tanev, a respected, tough veteran could indeed be used as a trade chip instead as the season rolls on.

While it would be smart of them to lock him up for a few more years, the Flames clearly aren't a contender in 2023-24, so therefore it's understandable as to why they don't want to give him more term, making this a situation to keep a very close eye on.
