It's been less than a week after Johnny Gaudreau shocked the hockey world, leaving the Calgary Flames and signing a 7 year deal with a team that is further away from a Stanley Cup in the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Gaudreau turned down a larger and longer contract with the Flames which was believed to be 8 years $10.5 million, to sign with the Blue Jackets for 7 years at $9.5 million.
While all of us were shocked that this happened, former NHL player Mike Commodore who once played for the Flames thinks he knows the reason that Gaudreau left.
The Calgary Flames General Manager Brad Treliving shared to the press that Gaudraeu was leaving for ''family reasons'' but there could definitely be more to it as Columbus is still over an 8 hour drive away from where he grew up.
Commodore believes there is definitely more to it and shared on Twitter what he believed the reason was:
Morning FolksI hope everyone is having an excellent daygot this a lot the last 5 days at Stampede»Flames were good last year, he had great year, more money, Why would Johnny Gaudreau want to leave?».my takecontinued
Folks..Gaudreau & his wife just spent the last 2 years in Covid Canada..endless lockdowns, restrictions, mandates, vax passport, curfews, empty arenas etc..how quickly we forget?..Health officials already fear mongering about what's coming this fall....Continued..
Folks..on top of Covid Canada..Calgary has the worst arena in the league by a landslide with a new mayor who immediately reneged the arena deal once elected.
IMO we are asking the wrong question..we should be asking «Why would Johnny Gaudreau want to stay?
There are definitely some interesting points and could have played a role in Gaudreau's decision.
Will this cause more players to leave Canada?
