Utah to Host the 2034 Winter Games? A Solid Argument for NHL Expansion

image

The International Olympic Committee revealed that the "preferred bidder" to host the 2034 Winter Games is none other than Salt Lake City.

SLC, who hosted the Olympics in 2002, would not only get a lot of visibility around the globe, they would get new arenas and other sports facilities.

This would make then a step closer to being in the NHL's radar for their next expansion, according to Elliotte Friedman:

Apropos of nothing, the International Olympic Committee bestowed Salt Lake City with "preferred bidder" status for the 2034 Winter Games. Basically, it means the organizing committee enters exclusive talks with the IOC to close the deal. (The official decision will be made next July.) A successful Olympic bid means a new arena for hockey, which makes Utah an even more attractive (and likely) NHL destination.

There's already been a lot of rumours concerning Utah, and how Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Jazz in the NBA, is apparently interested in owning an NHL team.

There's many other candidates to welcome the next NHL team. Quebec City, Houston and Atlanta are all in the running, but with a brand new arena and the visibility that would give the Olympics, Gary Bettman could be enticed to epand in Utah.
