While on paper, for next season this is an absolute win for the Calgary Flames as Huberdeau alone outscored Tkachuk last season (115 points Huberdeau vs 104 points Tkachuk), it was an interesting trade as both Huberdeau and Weegar have one season remaining on their current contracts, which they are UFA's at the end of. If both of these players are not fans of playing in Calgary, they will be forced to trade both or let them walk in free agency, and once again Calgary will be in a tough situation.
As soon as the trade happened, teams were apparently calling the Flames asking if Huberdeau is available, and even if teams want him as a mere rental, it will be a huge return for the Flames if they choose to trade him. The Flames need to decide whether they want to try to remain a contender or completely start over.
Our friends over at Blades of Steel reported yesterday that Elliote Friedman revealed the asking price for these two UFA's in Calgary.
Huberdeau is looking for a contract similar to his former teammate Aleksander Barkov and wants around $10 million per season for 8 years.
While defenceman Mackenzie Weegar is looking for a contract similar to his former Florida rival Mikhail Sergachev who just signed for 8 years with an AAV of $8.5 million.
At the moment, Calgary only had $9 million in cap space and still need to resign RFA's Andrew Mangiapane and Oliver Kylington, so if they want to lock up both Huberdeau and Weegar, some players will definitely need to be moved out.
Lucky for them though, at the end of the season Milan Lucic and Sean Monahan will be free agents, which will free up over $11 million, it's not enough to get both under contract, but it's a start!
Calgary will go into next season knowing the prices for both Huberdeau and Weegar on long-term extensions. Essentially, what is it going to take?
Other teams are speculating:
8x10 for Huberdeau, similar to Barkov
8x8.5 or something close for Weegar, similar to Sergachev deal James Johnson 🔥 (@JamesJohnsonYYC) July 29, 2022
