When Brad Treliving joined the Maple Leafs as the GM this summer, he had plenty of decisions to make, and with both Auston Matthews and William Nylander pending UFA's for next summer, breaking up the core four became a possibility.

Not an option

However, in a recent interview, Treliving revealed that breaking up the group was never an option, claiming that Nylander's extension is still a major priority for the front office.

Brad Treliving on the William Nylander negotiations: "Obviously it's a priority. We want to get Willy signed.

A deal is yet to be made, but it makes sense for this to be a priority, as the talented group of Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Nylander just need the right core around them to make a Stanley Cup run.

Keeping this core together

In his recent interview with The Athletic, Treliving opened up on the potential of breaking up the band.

Coming in and not having an inside view and just saying, 'I've got to do something just because of the narrative here' doesn't make any sense. I have to get to know it. I have to know where we can improve. But to do something, to take a really good piece and say, 'I'm moving it so I can stand up and say, I made a change' doesn't make sense to me.

This response makes plenty of sense for Treliving, as making a move just for the sake of it makes no sense, and with the addition of Ryan Reaves, Max Domi, John Klingberg and Tyler Bertuzzi gives them plenty of depth, and after moving Nylander down the middle, he's made plenty of positive changes without breaking up the core.
