Nick Robertson has had an infamously tough start to his NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has only played 55 games in the last 2 seasons combined. This has led fans, the media, and Robertson himself to become frustrated.
Many fans and media have started to slide Robertson down the pecking order when it comes to Maple Leafs prospects. He is now not considered the top prospect for the Maple Leafs anymore. When asked about this fall in the minds of the fans and media Nick Robertson had an interesting but vulgar response.
Robertson clearly still has a lot of self-belief and does not care what anyone else thinks of him.
Now Robertson is back with the Maple Leafs at training camp. Fully healthy he is looking to finally break out. He has fallen below Matthew Knies in the prospect pool and could lose out on a roster spot or playing time to him. It should be remembered though that when Robertson is healthy he has been very effective.
In his 51 AHL games played throughout his career he has 46 points which is great. In the NHL he has been less effective with only 7 points in 31 games playing mostly in a bottom-six role.
With the emergence of Knies and the several forwards signed by the Leafs, a path to a roster spot is rocky for Robertson. He will likely need to start out in the AHL and work his way back up to earn an opportunity. A good preseason could change his roster outlook too. Either way, Maple Leafs still have plenty of reasons to be optimistic that Nick Robertson can make an impact for them.
