Noah Hanifin is in the last year of his contract with the Calgary Flames. There were reports months ago that an extension is close. Today we got the reasoning for the hold up in negotiations.

Flames Struggling Once Again

The Calgary Flames are failing to live up to expectations for a second year in a row. After acquiring Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar many expected the team to be Stanley Cup contenders. Instead this season they are 6th in the Pacific with only 14 points.

The team's struggles have led to rumors flying about players being traded. To this point Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov were the most common names mentioned in trade talks. After the news that has come out today about Noah Hanifin he might get added to those rumor lists soon.

Insider Reveals Why Hanifin Hasn't Been Extended

Months ago there was reports that Noah Hanifin was getting close to an extension to remain with the Calgary Flames. We are now deep into November and no extension has been signed.

Recently it has been reported by NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun that the lack of an extension is on Hanifin's end. Apparently, he has broken off all negotiations with the team.

REPORT: #Flames defender Noah Hanifin was reportedly close to signing a massive extension with the club worth over $60 million last month.

The player ultimately changed his mind on the deal and broke off negotiations, given the team's performance and potential change in direction. That ship has now sailed for both sides.

As Calgary begins to listen to offers on some of their other pending UFAs Lindholm, Tanev, and Zadorov one club that checked in and «took a long look» on Hanifin over the past week or two were the #Yotes.

As the post above mentions the Arizona Coyotes have been one of the first teams to check in on Hanifin's availability. If Calgary continues to struggle closer to the NHL trade deadline things could get ugly and turn into a massive fire sale.
