The Athletic interviewed 55 different NHL players asking what is one rule change they want to see. 10 of them had the same idea.

NHLers Want Longer Overtimes

In a recent article for The Athletic, Michael Russo interviewed 55 NHL players and asked them what they wanted to see changed in the NHL rule book. Of these 55, 10 said either endless continuous three-on-three overtime (abolishing the shootout and ending games with a three-on-three goal) or extending overtime to 10 minutes.

Troy Terry, the leading point scorer on the Anaheim Ducks, was one of the six proponents of continuous overtime hockey. He said the following on the matter:

«I think three-on-three is as exciting as our game gets, just with all the open space and speed. I just think it's a more real way to end a hockey game.» - Troy Terry

Jack Eichel advocated for 10-minute overtime which would help end more games in overtime but would also ensure that there is an end to the games even if it means a shootout.

«I don't think it could be endless, but I like the idea of extending it" - Jack Eichel

Jason Robertson added on how the fans would love it.

«I like shootouts, but people want to see three-on-three»

The people certainly want to see three-on-three. As Terry said, it is the most exciting portion of the game and it is always a bit boring to watch an NHL game end with a skills competition.

Whether it is continuous three-on-three or 10-minute overtime, it is clear that the players want to see more three-on-three action.
