This season, all the debate has been about whether or not William Nylander, a UFA in his contract year, will sign a deal or if the Maple Leafs should just move him. Nylander is having a career season. Now more than ever, a resolution is within reach.

What the insiders say about Nyalnder's contract

While appearing on the NHL Network today, Elliotte Friedman was questioned over his remarks regarding yesterday's William Nylander contract discussion, which started with Nick Kypreos.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it gets done soon... Nick Kypreos he reported they're talking in the 8x11.25M range. I don't know that for sure but I don't think Nick is off too much if he's off at all. I think they're kind of talking about that kind of range. That's not where Toronto was in the summer, now they're in that area and I do think that's going to get done"

The news Kypreos broke yesterday is referenced here:

"It's trending closer to the Leafs and Willy getting a deal done, is what I hear.

The other belief is that it will be a number that's over [$11 million]. $11.25 million is the one that is probably mentioned the most. Times eight.

The other thing you gotta consider is that when the Leafs can frontload this and turn it into a $12 or $13 million upfront signing bonus, it's worth a heck of a lot more than $11.25 million. It creates greater value in real money."

Nylander seems to be closing in on a big deal that would probably cost him about $11 million over eight years.

This season for William Nylander has been his best

Austin Matthews or William Nylander have been the top Toronto Maple Leafs' standout performers this season. Nylander has played in 36 games and has 51 points, 19 goals, and 32 assists. He was always considered the fourth-ranked forward among the "Big Four," but he is now unquestionably the second-best. Ideally, his output can continue for the duration of the contract; if not, the NHL anticipates a significant increase in the wage cap.
