One player who was definitely disappointed with his outcome in free agency was defenceman John Klingberg. A right handed offensive defenceman is usually something every team is fighting over because they're rare, and Klingberg was really hoping to hit it big as a free agent.

Last December he apparently turned down an 8 year deal from the Dallas Stars that had a cap hit of $7 million, because his agent believed he could get more. The camp went into free agency looking for a 7 year deal at around $8.5 million per season, which is a big chunk of change for a 29 year old, but he is a former 67 point scorer, so we've seen players get paid more for less (looking at you Skinner).

Unfortunately for Klingberg, no team was looking to offer that this year and he ended up firing his agent and his new representation managed to get him a 1 year deal worth $7 million with the Anaheim Ducks.

But we've just learned that another deal may have been on the table for Klingberg that he turned down!

One of the most active teams this offseason and team that many people are looking forward to seeing next year is the Ottawa Senators. They brought in Alex Debrincat, Claude Giroux and Cam Talbot. The only thing the team is really missing is a top pairing right handed defenceman, and apparently they were in on Klingberg with a 4 year deal according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.

The Senators are looking to make a splash next season and Klingberg could have really helped this franchise. Time will only tell if he made a mistake not signing with the Senators.
