To this point we've seen players like Alex Galchenyuk, a former 3rd overall pick get released, Michael Dal Colle who was a former 5th overall pick, and today we saw Olli Juolevi a former 5th overall pick put on waivers to be sent to the AHL.
When a player gets drafted in the top 10 nevermind the top 5, usually they need to pan out for a team, but there are definitely some cases where it unfortunately does not.
This is another case where a player was given the opportunity to prove he can still play, but ended up being cut. Today the New Jersey Devils announced that they've released Thomas Hickey from his professional try out, who was a 4th overall pick back in 2007.

Hickey is now 33 years old and has been struggling with injuries these past few seasons, and those struggles may have just gotten worse as his chance at an NHL contract won't be happening with the Devils.
Hickey has played in 456 career games, registering 117 points.
