NHL Insider Frank Servalli has a series where he makes a prediction for all 32 NHL teams. His prediction for the New York Islanders was a very bold one, the prediction is surrounding the General Manager, Lou Lamoriello.
The General Manager who is nearing 81 years old would make it probable that a retirement may be coming, but nothing is set in stone on what is going on.
While Lamoriello might be nearing a retirement he has set this team up for success. Over the past summer, he signed Scott Mayfield, Pierre Engvall, and Semoyon Varlamov to contract extensions. As well three of the best players on the team, Mathew Barzal, Ryan Pulock, and Bo Horvat are already signed to long-term extensions.
Even if Lamoriello were to retire this Islanders team will be set to compete for a playoff spot for years to come. The Islanders fan base has been split on their opinions of Lamoriello for the past couple of seasons.
The thoughts on long-term contracts are split, some fans see it as a good thing while others believe the future has been ruined by the contracts. If the Islanders win the cup with these contracts on the books, Lamoriello would be celebrated for signing them.
