After a whirlwind few weeks of trade talks about Flyers Captain Claude Giroux, he was finally dealt to the Florida Panthers to chase his first stanley cup after the Flyers failed to live up to expectations this season.
But a big debate is what will Giroux do in the offseason when he becomes a Unrestricted Free Agent. The Panthers are a young skilled team and could definitely benefit from Giroux sticking around, but the cap space will be a huge issue for the Panthers.
Former NHLer and teammate Kimmo Timmonen believes Giroux will be heading back to his hometown.
Here is a quote from Timmonen on his podcast:
He's from Ottawa, his wife is too, and they go to Ottawa every summer for a few months, so I'm not ruling out the possibility, that if Florida doesn't work out, he'll sign a two, three year deal with Ottawa and kind of settle there for the rest of his career. That's probably the other possibility.
He's 34, has two kids, wife is from Ottawa, he likes it there I see it being an option for Claude after this season, no matter what happens with Florida, that he'll retire at home, in Ottawa, where all his friends and family are. I think, at that age, family is the priority.
The Ottawa Senators are a very skilled and young up-and-coming team that is missing a true #1 center and veteran leadership that Giroux would bring to the table. Giroux just turned 34 and at this point in his career, do you think he will return home with his family or do you think he goes elsewhere and tries to fight for another cup on a contender if he doesn't win with the panthers this season?
