The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled with goaltending since the beginning of 2022. Now with Jack Campbell injured and Petr Mrazek still struggling, there were some who believed that the Leafs and Sheldon Keefe would turn to rookie Erik Kallgren for the Heritage Classic.
That won't be the case though as Sheldon Keefe has already announced that Petr Mrazek will start for the Leafs on Sunday for the Heritage Classic.
If Howard Berger is right, apparently this wasn't Keefe's choice at all, because according to Berger the reason Mrazek is getting the start is because Dubas is forcing Keefe to play him. Berger shared these comments on his Twitter account Saturday:
#Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would not allow Sheldon Keefe to embarrass him by playing Erik Kallgren in the outdoor game on Sunday. Petr Mrazek was signed by Dubas as a free agent. End of story.
If these comments are true then there are far bigger issues in Toronto than simply goaltending.
