After starting the season with the Kraken, Wright often found himself a healthy scratch or playing less than 7 minutes a game, so after a short stint in the AHL, he was sent to the World Juniors where he captained Team Canada to a gold medal.
When the World Juniors were over, he was assigned back to the OHL for the Kingston Frontenacs, where he was traded to the Windsor Spitfires, for quite a haul.
The Spitfires were the top team in the Western Conference, only losing 24 games all season, and were heavy favourites going into the playoffs against the Kitchener Rangers.
Well, last night the Rangers officially pulled off the upset, sweeping the Spitfires in 4 games.
And the 8th seeds Kitchener Rangers SWEEP the Western Conference number one seeds Windsor Spitfires in the first round of the OHL playoffs!
What an upset! Unbelievable effort by Kitchener.#OHL #OHLRangers pic.twitter.com/NIkqR0AzHL— Caitlin Berry (@caitlinsports) April 7, 2023
Since then, Shane Wright has been getting absolutely roasted online:
Shane Wright got traded for 2 players, a 2nd, 3rd, 2 4ths, a cond. 5th, and 2 cond. 6ths to Winsdor. They just got swept in the 1st round by 8th seed Kitchener. World Hockey Report (@worldhockeyrpt) April 7, 2023
Windsor is one period away from getting swept by Mesar and the Rangers.
I've seen absolutely NOTHING from Shane Wright this whole series. Absolutely invisible when it matters most. Same as last year in the playoffs. Hate my takes all you want, this is an objective fact. The Habitant (@the_habitant) April 7, 2023
Sometimes the trade deadline bites you. Windsor traded 18 draft picks for Shane Wright, Brett Harrison and Jacob Holmes. They were each -6 and combined for 2 goals. The only good thing for the Spits is only 3 of them were their picks. The rest were acquired. Steve Clark (@SteveClarkMedia) April 7, 2023
