The Real Reason Connor Hellebuyck Hasn't Been Traded Has Been Revealed
Sean Reynolds, a reporter for Sportsnet covering the Jets, talked about why the Jets haven't traded Connor Hellebuyck.
Why the Jets Didn't Trade Hellebuyck
On the Full Press NHL Podcast, Reynolds talked about what's going on with the Jets and their star goalie, Connor Hellebuyck.
He talked about how the goalie would be a great fit for the Devils and why the deal hasn't happened yet.
"I think Connor Hellebuyck would be a great fit with the New Jersey Devils, but the New Jersey Devils want to go for the cup this year. So what they want to do is take their prospect pool, one of the best in the NHL, and say 'we will give you this, and you give us this guy so we can be good right now and you can be good in the future.' The Winnipeg Jets do not want that. What they want is the New Jersey Devils' assets that make them really good right now... New Jersey is not going to do it if they subtract three really good forwards and another defenseman from the process." - Sean Reynolds
Reorganizing Instead of Rebuilding
It looks like the Jets have decided not to rebuild, but to reorganize their assets and acquire young talents. That's what they did with the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade, getting picks and prospects for a veteran.
With Mark Scheifele also asking to be traded out, the Jets will likely choose him over their goalie if they decide not to let both go.
Without Hellebuyck, the Jets would dig a hole between them and their playoff ambitions. Parting ways with a Vezina contender would leave a big workload for their current backup, Laurent Brossoit, and hurt their chances of a deep playoff run.
However, if they can get a few interesting assets for Scheifele, they'll likely pull the trigger.
With a year left on both their contracts, it would be surprising if both stayed with the team, especially considering that they don't want to re-sign.
