The Seattle Kraken scored to take the lead with just over 3 minutes left in the game last night. However, Kraken forward Brandon Tanev made contact with Ilya Sorokin before the goal, leading Patrick Roy to challenge the play. Unfortunately for the coach, he lost the challenge. After the game he was frustrated, saying they 'were robbed.'
Tanev clearly does skate into the crease on his own and does make contact with Sorokin. However, the contact is very minimal, and he does separate himself from the netminder before the goal goes in.
Roy told us the explanation that he got from the refs after the failed challenge. The referees felt that the contact was not enough to justify the call. That being said, we have seen some pretty minimal contact be called for interference in the last couple of days.
On Friday, we saw Dylan Cousin's goal overturned after a challenge, despite the fact that the offending player was pushed into the goalie by a defender, and even then he made very little contact.
Similarly, John Carlsson's goal against the Maple Leafs was called back after a challenge as Capitals forward Nic Dowd made the slightest contact possible with Joseph Woll.
Hopefully, the NHL will finally create a set standard for what goalie interference is. If not, they might as well revoke the right for teams to challenge as it doesn't really seem to matter anyway.
Regardless of which way it goes, it always feels like a coin flip. As it stands, fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of consistency in these calls and now the coaches are starting to be more vocal about it as well.
