Earlier this week the Edmonton Oilers faced a shocking roadblock as the St. Louis Blues offer sheeted two of their players, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.
After the offer sheet was handed out to both players speculation began to grow around why this was done. Offer sheets in hockey are not commonplace and in the last 20 years have only come up a couple of times. A new report has revealed that several teams were considering making an offer sheet for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway and why the practice could become more common in the future.
In a post on X Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects decided to discuss this odd move by the St. Louis Blues. According to his sources throughout the league. several teams were looking at the possibility of an offer sheet. Cam Robinson also revealed that the salary cap in today's NHL is a major contributor to this rise in the use of offer sheets.
If the Edmonton Oilers do not match the St. Louis Blues offer sheets it could start an interesting trend in the NHL as a whole. Teams in the NHL are always looking for a way to gain an advantage.
In the past, the offer sheet has been unused as an unwritten rule. However, if this unwritten rule gets thrown out the window we could see utter chaos with young stars changing teams in the not-so-distant future.
