Washington Capitals to purchase Capfriendly, end public service
NHL fans across all fanbases got some bad news today as the Washington Capitals have reportedly agreed to purchase the popular site Capfriendly.
The news came this morning, from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman. While nothing is official yet, if Friedman is reporting it, odds are it is happening. The Capitals reportedly want fans to continue to be able to use and access the site until after this year's free agency period has already started, so it likely will not be officially sold until early July.
The popular salary cap website will reportedly shut down after the start of free agency in early July.

Reaction to the news has ranged from shock to heartbreak as the fan-favorite site is near its end. Capfriendly has been used by fans for years to keep track of their favorite teams cap situation and so much more. The site has accurate depth charts and rosters for every team, including prospect pools. They also have a buyout calculator, mock trade creator, and so many other helpful tools that fans have come to love.
Oh my goodness, @CapFriendly is shutting down after being purchased by the Washington Capitals.
This news is truly quite sad for fans of the NHL as Capfriendly was one of the more unique and useful websites in all of professional sports. Even NHL general managers have openly admitted to using the site.
This is truly horrendous news for NHL fans. I get why the Capitals would buy it but CapFriendly going dark sucks hard for the public.
Hopefully a legitimate replacement will come shortly. Currently PuckPedia is the best alternative, and they will continue to make additions and improvements as a new influx of fans fuels their site.
