Edmonton Oilers front office reportedly given ultimatum by Leon Draisaitl
The Edmonton Oilers have made some big moves this summer, but with Leon Draisaitl's pending free agency, they've got some much bigger ones to make.
For some time, the Edmonton Oilers have had the looming free agency of Leon Draisaitl hanging over their heads, and after the team made their first Stanley Cup Finals as a group, many believed the pressure would be alleviated. That may not be the case however, as it appears that Draisaitl's agent has officially given the team an ultimatum;
«There's no rush yet, but either it happens quickly, i.e. by the end of August, or it doesn't work out at all,» Poner said in German. «It will also become clear whether Edmonton wants him or not. Leon holds all the trump cards.»
According to his agent, if the deal doesn't get done by August, Draisaitl's party will go into next season as a free agent, putting the pressure on Edmonton to make a huge deal.
Frank Seravalli also revealed that the team are more than willing to slow play the whole situation, meaning that they are confident in their relationship heading into the season without a new deal in place. Simply put, if a deal will happen, Draisaitl would like to become the highest paid player in the NHL, and with Connor McDavid set to hit free agency a year later, the way they handle this will go a long way towards those negotiations as well.
