Over the past few years, there has been no doubting the greatness of Connor McDavid, as he has brought his career numbers to a ridiculous level, scoring 335 goals and 982 points in just 645 games played. In baseball, there is a player thriving at a similar record breaking pace, with the Los Angeles Dodgers Shohei Ohtani becoming the first player in MLB history to have 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.
When top insider Elliotte Friedman was asked to compare this record to hockey, he had a very interesting stance, claiming that it would be like a player scoring 100 goals and netting 100 assists in one season. 100 goals in a season is a feat that has never been achieved, with Wayne Gretzky's tally of 92 back in 1981/82 being the most ever in a single season, but this didn't stop Friedman from making a major prediction.
In NHL history, only one player has ever had 200 points in a season, with Gretzky doing it four times throughout his career, and with the Great One scoring 90 or more goals in just one of those seasons, it appears to be impossible. However, McDavid is one of only four players outside of Gretzky and Lemieux to score over 150 points in a season, joining Steve Yzerman, Bernie Nicholls and Phil Esposito when he had 153 back in 2022/23.
Ultimately, this record appears impossible to beat, and given that there's no way to compare the records over the two sports, it's a tough comparison to make, but with no one else scoring at a level like McDavid, if there was a comparison, he would be the only one capable of achieving that feat currently in the NHL.
