The Edmonton Oilers made the decision earlier this week to bring in controversial General Manager Stan Bowman to run their team. After the initial outrage and frustration from fans, the narrative has now flipped to the plan going forward for Stan Bowman and the Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers have already been busy this summer signing players like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson. Additionally, interim GM Jeff Jackson made a major trade sending Ryan McLeod to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for prospect Matt Savoie.
All of these moves have put the Edmonton Oilers and Stan Bowman in a difficult spot with very little salary cap space and still several players to re-sign including two key young pieces.
The Edmonton Oilers have several big contracts that need sorting out before the season. The two most pressing are center Dylan Holloway and defenseman Philip Broberg. Dylan Holloway spent the 2023-24 season as a key middle six forward while Philip Broberg came up and performed well in the playoffs.
The Oilers are currently $354,167 over the salary cap for the 2024-25 NHL season. With extensions coming for both players, this could rise well over 3 to 4 million dollars. As a result, the Edmonton Oilers will need to make significant moves to trade either one of these unsigned players or players already under contract to create room.
As the offseason continues this will be one of the most interesting situations to watch over the coming months.
