Last year, the Montreal Canadiens were near the bottom of the league and were awarded the 5th overall pick in the 2024 draft which they used to select Ivan Demidov, a dynamic Russian winger. The Canadiens knew that Demidov had one more year on his contract with SKA so he would need to stay overseas for the first year after his draft year but they did not mind this much.
Demidov has been in the headlines all year for being under-utilized by Roman Rotenberg and SKA St. Petersburg all year but recently has gone on a goal-scoring streak as he was recently promoted to the first line. Through his last five games, Demidov has six goals and 10 points bumping his season totals up to 13 goals and 31 points in 40 games.
Following his recent performance, SKA coach Roman Rotenberg said that SKA was a better spot for Demidov than Montreal at the moment and took shots at his NHL club.
Claiming that a KHL team is better than an NHL team certainly is extreme, even considering how SKA has former NHL talents like Evgeny Kuznetsov, Mikhail Grigorenko, and Tony DeAngelo on their team.
Given how the Canadiens are one of the worst teams in the NHL, it would make sense why Rotenberg believes they would fall to SKA but there are no talents like Cole Caufield or Nick Suzuki on SKA.
While we will likely never see the two teams duel in a best-of-seven series, it would be interesting to watch as the Canadiens would be fighting for the pride of the NHL.
