Former head coach Bruce Boudreau just went live on air and revealed the Toronto Maple Leafs' biggest weakness going into the final stretch of the season, which is the key to beating the team.

Boudreau Reveals The Key To Beating the Leafs is Shutting Down Auston Matthews

The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken a different approach to this season's deadline, electing to add some size and grit on the back end and another depth forward who can kill penalties and who is gritty as well. The clear new direction is something that GM Brad Treliving has been vocal about since the beginning, and he has said that he has the star players in the dressing room who can win.

However, Bruce Boudreau recently went on air to discuss the Leafs' weaknesses and said that if you can shut down Auston Matthews, you can win.

«Stop Matthews and you stop the Leafs,» Boudreau declared. «The others are good, but he's like the head of the snake.»

The statement kind of goes without saying. Of course, if you shut down a team's best player they will struggle to have the same level of success. Also, Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the NHL, it's not necessarily easy to just shut him down.

Leafs Grit Showing in Likely Matchup Between Them and Bruins During Last Game

With the way the playoffs are set up, you can almost see the matchups already at this point in the season. With all signs pointing towards a Bruins-Leafs first round, that put a lot of tension in their matchup the other night. It's safe to say the Leafs looked like a different team, despite the loss.

Only time will tell if the Leafs will be able to build on the success of last year's postseason.
