Earlier this week, the Calgary Flames traded their number one goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, to the New Jersey Devils in return for defenseman Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick in 2025.
Many teams were interested in acquiring Markstrom, including the Toronto Maple Leafs.
General manager Brad Treliving knows Markstrom very well. He's the one who signed his six-year contract with the Flames. However, Calgary still chose to accept another offer.
Elliotte Friedman shared what Treliving was ready to pay to get the goalie in the latest 32 Thoughts episode. He stated that the Leafs' offer was similar to the Devils':
The Devils offered Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick for Markstrom at 70% of his salary.
We can't believe the Leafs couldn't offer more than that to get him.
Treliving has all the assets he needs to pull off big trades. However, he didn't and must now look elsewhere for his goalie needs.
While other candidates remain available for the Leafs, Markstrom was an interesting one, and he'll now help the Devils as they look to bounce back from a tough season.
