Through Ovechkin's 18 year career so far, he has score 797 goals and 1440 points in 1304 games. He had led the league in goal scoring 9 times and is a Stanley Cup champion.
We've all been paying attention to his race to catch Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky for the most goals all time, but in doing so, we almost missed the fact that he could very well set a new NHL record this week in another category.
Even at the age of 37, Ovechkin is still firing the puck at a rapid rate. Currently tied for 4th in shots this season with Auston Matthews at 129, averaging 4.3 shots per game. Over his career, he has a shots per game average of 4.75, which after his 1304 games puts him at 6,190 shots on goal (we don't even want to know how many he has missed).
The current leader in shots on goal is all-star, hall of fame defenceman Raymond Bourque who from the point, fired a total of 6,209 shots onto goaltenders. Ovechkin only trails Bourque by 19 shots, so judging by his current pace this season, it should only take him just over 4 games to set a new NHL record!
When at first you don't succeed, try again. #Ovechkin drifts into space after his first attempt and stays ready to pull the trigger on another one timer. #goalscorer #smarthockey #6thsense #6thsensehockey #hockeysense #NHL #capitals #NHLIsback pic.twitter.com/VeZ9qzmkb2 6th Sense Hockey (@6thSenseHockey) July 29, 2020
