Jaromir Jagr, one of the few names that is known by all fans through multiple different decades and eras.
Jagr was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 5th overall, all the way back in 1990. The 50 year old, has played in 1733 NHL games and ranks second on the all time points list with 1921 points.
We last saw Jagr in the NHL during the 2017-18 season where he got into 22 games with the Calgary Flames. The past few seasons he has been playing on his Kladno Knights team in the Czech league.
While he has said he intends to play until he physically can't anymore, it appears that we might finally be at that day:
It's definitely not coming, not at all. To be honest, I don't even feel like it. Unless there's still a Winter Classic, which I promised there would be, I guess I'd have to force myself to go play. Otherwise, I'm not drawn back at all.
Even if I wasn't the owner and only had hockey to do, I would still have problems training and playing games. To concentrate on hockey at all. It's more or less impossible. Or I'd have to stop working for the club altogether, which I don't think would help.
After 32 years of playing professional hockey, it looks like his love for the game just isn't enough to keep him going:
Not at all. I like hockey, but it's hard work. Physically it's very demanding.
At my age, playing at some level is challenging in itself. To prepare, to motivate. Not to mention the need for rest. Because of the time spent on the ice rink and in meetings, I don't have time to deal with myself between nine o'clock and two in the afternoon. To go to practice tired and to get tired physically, I can't give it, I won't give it.
