In the 2020-21 season, Jeff Petry arguably had the best season of his career, and for a majority of the season he was even in talks for the Norris trophy. He was also a huge part of the Montreal Canadiens run to the Stanley Cup.
Unfortunately for this last season though Petry fell apart and looked very bad until the coaching change, which sparked a second life in Petry.
It was announced recently that Petry would like to move on from Montreal but not because he didn't enjoy playing there, but because of vaccination policies for his family.
According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff:
Hearing #Habs are trading Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to #pens in exchange for Mike Matheson and a draft pick.@DailyFaceoff Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 16, 2022
This atleast for Montreal, gets the remaining of Petry's cap off the books, but Matheson who is 28 has 4 years remaining on a $4,875,000 cap hit contract.
