This years free agency buzz was all about the top player available in Johnny Gaudreau. It's not very often that a 115 point scorer makes it to free agency and teams didn't want to miss on the opportunity to sign this star, well, apparently one team did.
Gaudreau has played with the Calgary Flames his entire career and while the Flames showed how desperate they were to keep him, Gaudreau felt it was best for him and his family to move on.
Johnny Hockey signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets for 7 years with an AAV of $9.5 million, while the Calgary Flames reportedly offered him 8 years at $10.5 million, so it definitely was not about money on why he left the Flames.
When Gaudreau left he said he wanted to get closer to family who are in the New Jersey area and while Columbus is much closer than he was when he was in Calgary, it's still over an 8 hour drive away.
But it's been reported by Elliotte Friedman that Columbus was not his first choice, it just turns out that his first choice not only didn't want him, they didn't even inquire about him!
Elliotte Friedman states that Gaudreau's number one choice was Philadelphia, but the Flyers were «never» in on him or tried to sign him
It's hard to believe that the Flyers who are desperate to be a contending team were not interested in Gaudreau's services, but apparently that is the case as they didn't even reach out to see what he was looking for.
