Don Sweeney is among the finalists to win the Jim Gregory Trophy, given to the best General Manager in the NHL. After his team had a record-breaking season, he deserves it. He made good moves and gave his team the tools to perform well in the playoffs. Even if it ended on a bad note, he still did an amazing job last year.

Now, can he repeat his magic this summer?

The Bruins have only 28 players signed on their roster, with 26 free agents and only a mere $4,937,500 to deal with.

It seems clear that Sweeney will have to make some trades this summer in order to free up some cap space.

The goalie is none other than Linus Ullmark, a Vezina Trophy finalist.

At first, this comes as a shock because without Ullmark, the Bruins would never have broken the NHL's record for most wins in a season.

He's been phenomenal until the playoffs, where Jeremy Swayman had to come in for the seventh game against the Florida Panthers.

The insider Joe Haggerty reported his take on the matter, and fans won't like it.

"I'd be surprised at this point, given their salary cap situation if Ullmark is back with the team."

A Logical Step

The issue here is that Ullmark will certainly ask for a lot of money for his next contract. His current $5 million AAV deal will end in 2025, and the Bruins could see him walk away for nothing.

They need space, and he needs money that the Bruins can't give him.

Trading Ullmark is only the logical step to this dead end.
