NHL Central Scouting Director Dan Marr is being questioned over his comments on Russian prospects at the NHL Draft Combine.
Marr said that 9 Russians eligible for the NHL Draft were invited to the Draft Combine, but were unable to get said prospects over.
A few top Russian prospects projected to potentially go in the first round include Top Prospect Matvey Michkov, a prospect some consider the 2nd best Draft Prospect besides Connor Bedard, as well as Winger Daniil But & Defensemen Dmitry Simashev & Mikhail Gulyayev.
Despite Marr's response, Twitter was quick to point out that in May, Michkov said he had heard nothing about the Draft Combine, or his approval to appear at the result.
Michkov is reported to attend the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville, despite the ongoing Russian Invasion of Ukraine, which has hindered public viewings of the Russian since the offensive, with limited reporting out of Russia.
It's unclear if any, or what discussions, were had between Marr and the Russian prospects, both before or after Michkov's comments, but it could imply either the effort made by Central Scouting was not as serious as reported, expecting Russians to not be able to come over for testing, or even that the invites were given after Michkov's comments in May, which would make the waiting time for a Visa approval a difficulty for Michkov and the other invited Russians.
It's unclear the situation that has played out, and with more time, it will hopefully be made clear the specifics of the process, but it's unlikely that not being at the combine will have any major impacts on any Russian draft stocks.
