Elias Pettersson Refuses to Sign Extension for a Surprising Reason
This offseason Elias Pettersson is eligible for a contract extension. Although his contract is not up until the end of this upcoming season many have expected him to be further in contract talks than he is. Today we got some news on what the hold-up may be for the two sides.
Pettersson Holding Out On Extension
According to Harman Dayal of The Athletic Pettersson is waiting to sign a contract until after Auston Matthews signs his looming extension. Matthews is likely to set a new benchmark for number-one centers in the NHL with his next contract. Pettersson looks to be taking advantage of this and hoping for a higher salary as a result.
Elias Pettersson is one of many star players expected to wait until the Auston Matthews contract extension is completed before beginning negotiations with his team. Per, Harman Dayal, as reported by The Athletic.
What Might A Pettersson Extension Look Like?
If we are using Matthews' potential contract as a benchmark we can start to speculate on Pettersson's future contract as well. Matthews has been rumored to be getting a 3-5 year contract worth around 12 to 14 million per season. If we use their current cap hits as a likely gap between the two in average annual value Pettersson would likely come in around 9 to 11 million per year.
