Coming off of a historic record-breaking season, Erik Karlsson is the biggest fish on the trade market.
Karlsson let it be known that he had requested a trade after his San Jose Sharks missed the playoffs yet again last season despite Karlsson's heroics.
The Swedish superstar tallied 25 goals and 101 points on his way to his third Norris Trophy for the NHL's best defenseman.
Multiple teams are rumored to be in on Karlsson including Carolina, Edmonton and his former team the Ottawa Senators.
But there are reports that none of these teams are his preferred destination.
Reports suggest that Karlsson prefers to be traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins have been reported to be among the frontrunners in the Karlsson sweepstakes, but now have the advantage in knowing that Karlsson prefers to play for them.
The fit in Pittsburgh has been mentioned as a top reason for Karlsson to go there.
Pittsburgh is in win-now mode, and new GM Kyle Dubas has a mandate from ownership to maximize the final years of the
Sidney Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin era.
Karlsson would also take some of the pressure off of vetern D-Man Kris Letang and would be a perfect passing threat to stars like Crosby and Malkin on the power play.
Another factor leaning toward Pittsburgh is that Carolina, another frontrunner in the sweepstakes employs
Brent Burns.
Burns and Karlsson played together in San Jose and it wasn't a good fit, with Karlsson having some of the worst years of his career when teammates with Burns.
While Carolina may be a better team than Pittsburgh on paper, Karlsson would give the Penguins the best chance they've had since the glory years of back-to-back Stanley Cups.
Where should Karlsson be traded?
