Hockey Canada Introduces A Controversial New Rule
Hockey Canada announced today a new rule which is quickly becoming the point of debate online.
Hockey Canada Announces Rule To Prevent Minor Hockey Players from Changing Base Layer
With the upcoming season, Hockey Canada has announced that they will be encouraging players to wear their base layer (garments that go under the equipment) to and from the arena. They stipulate that any player who wishes to change at the arena will do so in a closed washroom stall inside the changeroom.
"All participants have the right to utilize the dressing room or appropriate and equivalent dressing environment based on their gender identity, religious beliefs, body image concerns, and/or other reasons related to their individual needs." - Hockey Canada spokesperson Esther Madziya
The rule comes as a way to promote inclusivity in the changeroom and make everyone feel comfortable no matter their identity, religion, or other mental health factors.
Minor Coaches Are Happy With Change of Rule Aimed at Inclusivity
Hockey Canada also stated that the rule will be enforced by local coaches and staff members, who will also be required to inform parents of the rule change. One coach spoke about his favourable view of the rule change.
"This isn't just about gender, it's about everyone being comfortable. Coaches can't always visually identify and automatically know what gender someone identifies with, so this just allows everybody to fit into that dressing room."
Robinson noted that Parents have complained about kids being sweaty traveling to and from the arena, however, he aptly notes that this is a small price to play to make the game of hockey more inclusive.
