Building on the momentum of his impressive sophomore season that saw him on track for 46-goals, a contract extension for Cole Caufield in Montreal is reportedly imminent.
Montreal Canadiens' Strategy
In line with their proclivity for locking in young talents on long-term contracts, the Montreal Canadiens seem to be inching closer to offering a seven or eight-year contract to Caufield, their star shooter.
Caufield's Performance and Pay
Following his 26-goal sophomore campaign, Caufield has emerged as arguably the most dynamic Habs forward in the last twenty years. Given his stellar performance, it was widely anticipated that Caufield would command over $8-million. However, the Canadiens have established an internal cap, with the highest salary not exceeding that of their captain Nick Suzuki, who earns $7,875,000.
Extension Info
According to Tony Marinaro, a Caufield extension worth approximately $60-million is just around the corner.
I stand by my report. A 7 or 8 year contract (for Caufield), an annual salary that will not exceed Suzuki's 7.85 million dollars per year. We are approaching the finish line! Stay tuned, it's coming!
Salary Cap Implications
In the light of the salary cap being anticipated to rise by a substantial amount in the upcoming years, this deal could prove to be a real steal.
