The big buzz over the weekend was the big blockbuster trade between the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers which included the big names of Matthew Tkachuk, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar.
When this deal was made, according to the NHL it was the first ''sign and trade'' in NHL history.
The interesting part about this trade is the Flames acquired two high end players who are both on the final year of deals that bring them straight into free agency as UFA's.
Many were wondering if the Flames were in conversation with the two players before the trade occurred to see if they would sign extensions.
According to Andy Strickland on the Cam & Strick podcast, there had been no talks in place when the deal was done. Stickland said there also has been very little contract talks since the deal was made as well.
To me this sounds like the Flames have full intentions on flipping the two players for additional assets. Does this mean that the Flames are potentially entering a rebuild?
If this is the plan for the Flames, they will definitely acquire quite a few assets for Huberdeau. His team friendly contract and level of production is exactly what a team looking for that one additional player to put them over the top needs.
