Legal Action Incoming For Corey Perry After Being Terminated By The Blackhawks?
Corey Perry's termination from the Chicago Blackhawks has come with much speculation about what happened. We now have a better understanding of the timeline, and a new report highlighting if we can expect legal action to come.
Perry Could Potentially File Grievance For Contract Termination
Corey Perry cleared waivers yesterday and officially had his contract terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks after several days of investigation into a workplace incident. The timeline for his investigation and the sequence of events has been reported as the following by the Chicago Sun Times:
Tuesday morning, Nov. 21: Perry participated in the Hawks' practice at Fifth Third Arena.
Tuesday afternoon: Perry flew with the Hawks to Columbus, one day before a game against the Blue Jackets.
Tuesday night: An incident involving misconduct on Perry's part occurred between Perry and a team employee in Columbus, according to a report by ESPN's Emily Kaplan.
Wednesday morning, Nov. 22: Perry participated as normal in the Hawks' morning skate at Nationwide Arena.
Wednesday afternoon: A few hours before the game, the team with Perry among them filtered out of the Hilton Columbus Downtown to board buses for the short journey to the arena
Wednesday night before puck drop: Hawks management was informed of Perry's alleged misconduct, and he was abruptly scratched from the lineup.
Thursday, Nov. 23, through Monday, Nov. 27: The Hawks internally investigated the misconduct allegations against Perry. The NHL and NHLPA were notified, but the investigation was run by the team. The police were not involved because the misconduct was not considered a criminal matter.
Tuesday morning, Nov. 28: Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson met with players and coaches after the morning skate, informing them the team intended to terminate Perry's contract.
Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 29: Perry cleared waivers, and his contract was terminated.
Since the investigation was not criminal, Perry has grounds to potentially file a grievance with the Blackhawks. This, however, would require airing his dirty laundry out for pretty much all to see, which might not be something he wants to do.
Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson Emotional Delivering News of Perry's Termination
The Chicago Blackhawks held a press conference announcing the decision to terminate Perry's contract, during which GM Kyle Davidson was noticeably upset. He did, however, shut down any of the speculation of the incident regarding other players on the team or their families.
Kyle Davidson on the Corey Perry situation: "It's obviously been very tough. Yeah, it's been a tough couple days."
We await to see if Perry will file a grievance or if he tried to just move on from the matter.
