It has been a wild ride for veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson over the past few years. He was once widely regarded as the best defenseman in the world but hit a rough patch after being traded to San Jose. This past season saw a return to his old form, and it now looks like Karlsson is ready to compete for a Stanley Cup again.
Karlsson Wants Out
According to reporter Luke Fox, Karlsson has informed San Jose that he would like to be traded, preferably as soon as possible. He adds that while there is not a strict timeline on San Jose to get a deal done, Karlsson would like to go wherever gives him the best chance at winning a cup.
It looks like Karlsson realizes his time might be running out, and wants to win that prized Stanley Cup before calling it a career.
Karlsson Wants to Win
Karlsson gave an interesting quote to go along with the report of his trade request.
"I'm the best when you need to be the best. But if I don't have the chance to get to the place where you need to play the big games, then I might as well not do it. I could go through 82 games a year and be good, but I want to play when matters." - Erik Karlsson
While the logic may not make sense to everyone, it certainly makes sense to Karlsson. He wants to play important games and be a difference-maker. The current favorite to win the Norris Trophy wants to get his hands on that beautiful Stanley Cup, and won't stop until it's his.
