NHL Insider Reveals How The NHL Will Handle 2018 Canadian WJC Players Leaving Their Teams
In recent days several NHL players linked to the 2018 Canadian World Junior Championship scandal have been granted a leave of absence from their teams. Today an NHL insider has clarified how this will affect each team going forward.
Several NHL Players Take Leave Of Absence
In the past couple of days, four NHL players have been granted a leave of absence from the NHL. Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, and Michael McLeod have all stepped away from their respective teams after being potentially connected to the 2018 scandal involving their Canadian World Junior team.
With all of these players now away from their teams fans and media were wondering about the effects this had on each individual team. Today an NHL insider clarified how the salaries and roster spots of these players will be counted while they remain on their leave of absence.
NHL Insider Reveals How The NHL Will Handle Canadian WJC Players Leaving Their Teams
This afternoon NHL insider Frank Seravalli was able to do some digging on the logistics of each player being away from the team.
According to Seravalli each player's salary will continue to count against the cap and they will continue to be paid. They will not count against the roster limit though until they were to re-join the team.
Subject to change, but my understanding of the current situation for the 4 #NHL players who have taken leave of absence:
- Will continue to be paid.
- Continue to count against the salary cap.
- Do not count against the roster limit (e.g. non-roster status).
If these players are indeed implicated officially by the police in the scandal from 2018 then this arrangement would likely change. The London Police are scheduled to speak next week giving an update and potentially confirming if these players are being charged.
