Mark Scheifele's future with the Jets was definitely uncertain this offseason, as trade rumors swirled amidst ongoing contract negotiations. However, recent developments from a trusted NHL insider have shed some light on the situation:
The Likelihood of a Scheifele Trade is Diminishing
In a recent update from hockey insider Darren Dreger, it has been revealed that the Winnipeg Jets are no longer actively pursuing a trade for Mark Scheifele as they gear up for the upcoming training camp. This shift in strategy suggests that the Jets are increasingly inclined to retain Scheifele in their lineup, especially if they believe they are well-positioned for a competitive season ahead. Scheifele's innate ability to find the back of the net and his familiarity with Winnipeg's playing systems make him a valuable asset to the team.
"There have been contract discussions on both players, Scheifele and [Connor] Hellebuyck, but right now, going into the training camp process for all these clubs, it's backburner for the Winnipeg Jets and for the players involved here.» He added, «Despite what the critics say, the Jets believe they've got a good time and they're in win-now mode."
Scheifele's Willingness to Stay Will Boost the Morale in Winnipeg
Earlier speculations had hinted at Scheifele's desire to part ways with Winnipeg, a troubling prospect for the Jets, who risked losing one of their star players. However, Dreger has refuted these claims, alleviating concerns among Jets' fans. This revelation should ease any rush to trade Scheifele before the deadline.
"Some things that need to be clarified: Scheifele has never asked for a trade, nor has he said that he doesn't want to extend in Winnipeg. But they're going to park it for now and just get the season going"
It's important to note that delaying Scheifele's contract extension for too long carries its own risks, and it remains to be seen what course of action will ultimately serve the Jets' best interests as the season unfolds.
