NHL referees have developed a league-wide reputation in recent years of being extremely sensitive. Apparently, the league has given them a directive to shut down criticism from players. Over the last two seasons, officials have called more unsportsmanlike conduct penalties than ever before.

Ref Thinks The Game Is All About Him

Tonight this trend continued. In a preseason game between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, Mikey Eyssimont got into an altercation with one of the on-ice officials. As the Lightning dumped the puck into the zone, he was interfered with by the out of position referee, directly leading to a turnover.

On his way out of the zone Eyssimont yelled back at the referee. Instead of admitting his mistake or just letting it go, the referee immediately threw up his arm and called Eyssimont for unsportsmanlike conduct.

You can judge this for yourself but if we are being honest with ourselves this should never be a penalty. Watching it for the first time, many would likely think the call was on the other team as there really isn't much there.
